And the Oscar goes to? Sex and the City

Allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment over the years, whether substantiated or not, have frequently been discussed amongst the community and the places we each call home. It affects virtually all nationalities and religions around the world.

However, even one child or teen being abused by a priest/pastor (or by anyone else) is too many.

Most cases of abuse, although being reported recently, go back two, three, four, or even fifty decades. Unfortunately, there was much less knowledge of the dynamics of abuse then than there is available today. Many times, offenders would be allowed to continue in their ministries after going through a time of brief counseling.

I am not against restoration of an individual, however, I believe it’s worth mentioning that according to research approximately 70% of accused priest/pastors were reported to also be survivors of abuse themselves. Wow!

A psychopath is murdering women across the Midwest. The FBI sends Agent Clarice Starling to interview psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant, diabolical cannibal who could provide insight into the killer’s identity. Lecter agrees to help Starling only if she’ll feed his morbid curiosity with details of her own complicated life. Starling is forced to confront not only her own hidden demons, but also an evil so powerful that she may not have the courage – or strength – to stop it.

Statistics recorded that many of them had serious psychological problems such as substance abuse and/or mood and personality disorders.

Thankfully, we have elevated our standards and now members of the clergy are more mature when they begin seminary. They undergo intense comprehensive psychological testing’s that includes specific evaluation for sexual problems and risk factors, and they are extensively trained in how to manage sexual issues.

See another one of my articles: Fifty Shades of Play: Happy Valentine’s Day!

We live in a culture where the sexual abuse of children is not uncommon. There have been reported cases of public and private school children that have been sexually abused or molested by school staff or employees. Regrettably, research also indicates that a greater percentage of children have been abused by family members, rather than by the clergy or school staff.

The publicity surrounding sexual abuse has raised consciousness in many communities of faith, and many have established stringent and detailed policies for ensuring the safety of children and young people.

These often include such things as never having a child alone in a room with an adult; an open-door policy in classrooms; extensive screening and background checks on all personnel who come into contact with children, and detailed procedures for reporting suspected abuse and dealing with offenders.

Child sexual abuse is a complex and serious problem. A few years ago, I attended a Darkness to Light training session at the Red Cross Cayman Islands and was also informed that the training could also be completed online at

At Darkness to Light, their vision is to have a world free of child sexual abuse. A world in which all children are loved, protected, and nurtured, able to grow up healthy, with their sexual boundaries intact.

Sins that bring Curses

We read in Deuteronomy Chapters 27 & 28 that curses are promised for sins in these six areas: idolatry, dishonoring of parents, dishonesty and deception, cruelty to the helpless, sexual sin of any kind, and disregard for the law. (Some references concerning the sins of the fathers are Deuteronomy 29:24-28; 2 Chronicles 7:19-22; 34:23-25; Ezra 9:4; 13-15; Nehemiah 9:1-3; Isaiah 65:6-7 and Jeremiah 14:20-22; 16:10-13).

Please also see one of my previous articles:

The Sins of the Father (Generational Curses: The Dark Tower)

“There is that unseen and mysterious connection between a father’s (also mother’s) sins and the path of their children. If the parent commits certain kinds of sin, regardless of their training, or the social, cultural, and environmental influences on them- the sin or iniquity that is committed is “passed down” to the children, to the third and forth generation.

Each generation adds to the cumulative iniquity, further weaken the resistance of the next generation”.

Pastor Burton Stokes

However, Mr. Stokes also stated that he does not mean to imply that there is any deficiency in the power of the blood of Jesus, which redeems us from the curse of sin, or that believers today are bound to the letter of Old Testament Law. But if we rebel in our hearts and rebuild idols in our lives, we can be ensnared again by the same yoke of bondage from which we’ve been delivered (see Galatians 5:1, 16). Therefore, we again become susceptible to the curse.

Please note however that these insights are not intended to bring you into fear or bondage, nor cause you to attribute every problem in your life, habit, or bad character trait to a curse or a demon. Sometimes emotional and behavioral problems have physiological or biological foundation as I have come to realize.

If we take the time to look at the various issues we have in our lives and become aware of our vulnerabilities, I strongly believe with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can renounce the sins we’ve yielded to in our lives and strengthen our defenses against the evil one.

An example of a prayer may be like this:

“Father, we come before you to confess and repent of our sins
and the iniquity of our forefathers. Forgive us for the sins of idolatry,
witchcraft, rebellion, immorality of any kind, addictions etc.
According to Ephesians 6:12, we bind all principalities and
powers trying to influence us or our family, and we forbid them to operate in
the name of Jesus. We declare that our Family is under the blood of Jesus; we
revoke any generational curses and say that they will go no further. Jesus
became a curse for us, therefore we are a generation that serves God.
Father, forgive us for depending upon any source that is not
of you. Pour out your supernatural power in our families, so we will not be
bound by the things of the natural world. We ask you to send your warring
angels to do battle on our behalf.  We
thank you in advance that our children will take their place in the body of
Christ and fulfill your calling upon their lives.
Father, we submit to you, and our hope and expectations are
from you alone and no other spirit. By the power and authority of Jesus Christ
of Nazareth, we declare ANY satanic influence directed towards our families
destroyed and defeated by Jesus’ death on the cross.
We thank you for freeing us from the bondage of our past and
cleansing us by the blood of Christ. We also would like to thank you for our
faithful Christian heritage- for those ancestors who did follow you and prayed
for us so that we may become stronger in you and the power of the Holy Spirit.
We thank you for your mercy and your grace and for the
blessings you bestowed upon us and our families. Amen”.

Demons are Masters of Deceit

Satan’s goal is, through deception, to entice believers to sin or commit any act which quenches the Holy Spirit in their lives or dilutes their effectiveness in glorifying God through both personal conduct and Christian service. His desire is to find any areas in our lives where he can attach himself (See Ephesians 4:27). Through his demons he seeks to find any “sin handles” which give him access to influence us into actions of disobedience towards God.

Satanism is a big problem around the world and it is beyond anything that has been portrayed in the press or in movies. Every city, town or country has its covens, groups or community of people who directly worship and serve Satan.

It doesn’t matter how you “pretty it up” and make it look glamorous, every religion that worships and serves demons is a form of Satanism. Some people refer to them as energies, vibrations, pagan gods, spirit entities etc.

I don’t care! They are still demons!

Demons are masters of deceit. They have the ability in the spirit realm to “switch the sets” just the same as men do in the movie making industry. If you have ever visited Universal Studios, Warner Brothers (WB) etc., where many of the movies are made in America, you can walk down one street and be in the “Old West,” turn down the corner, and you are in 18th century England, turn another corner, and you are in a different time and country, maybe even on a different planet!

Demons can do the same thing in the spirit world and create all sorts of illusions, like modern day magicians for the humans under their control.

I have learnt that in some Eastern religions they center around gaining contact with the spirit world through meditation techniques to blank the mind. My scripture tells me that we are responsible for and should control our own minds at all times. (II Corinthians 10:5)

Visualization and guided imagery are also very old techniques but effective for gaining contact with the spirit world. Apparently, those techniques alone are responsible for thousands of Christians falling into the trap of using occultic practices.

Most important to note is that children go through a developmental stage where they use a lot of imagination and visualization.

During my ongoing extensive research, I was stunned to find out that there are many occultic games and toys for children. Parents should be extremely careful about the toys they buy for their children and the types of video games that they play.

The Bible says we are the temple of the Holy Spirit and just like a house, our temple should be guarded and protected from “unwelcomed doorways”.

What is a doorway? It’s a term used as a sin that defiles the temple.

Types of Doorways

  • Inheritance (Generational curses etc.)
  • Ouija board
  • Ritual sex
  • Tarot cards
  • General occult games
  • Animal sacrifice
  • Murder
  • Horoscope
  • Blood contracts
  • Witchcraft
  • Drugs
  • Kung fu
  • Karate
  • Human sacrifice
  • Drinking blood (animal & human)
  • Hypnosis
  • Incest
  • Palm reading
  • Yoga
  • Rock music
  • Occult & horror movies
  • Rebellion
  • Drunkenness
  • Multiple sexual relationships
  • Cannibalism
  • Astral-projection
  • Blasphemy

We can create many doorways and I’ve listed a few above however one such door way is sexual molestation.

Sexual molestation unfortunately is the most common childhood doorways. Apparently, it is always followed by a cycle of early sexual involvement on the part of the child with ever increasing involvement in sexual sins as the person gets older. This is usually because of the demons that may have been placed in the child at an early age.

Children are very vulnerable and should be protected at all cost! However, we adults are susceptible too and should be aware of the basic differences between the Occult and Christianity.

For example, the occultist will always try to control their contact with the spirit world and try to control the person or people within. If they do not do what the they are told, they are then punished. To a large extent, the Satanist appears to be controlling the power they are using for whatever purpose it’s being use for at the time.

However, as Christians, we are never in contact with the spirit world except for the brief occasions when the Holy Spirit allows such contact and we Christians do not and cannot control the power of God. We are simply his servants or vessels of honor, nothing more.

The Lord works through His servants as He chooses, not as we choose. Demons however, only cooperate with humans to give them power when that person wants it, and it is only used as a tool or I’d say a “carrot stick” to draw them even farther away from the Lord and into satanic worship.

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit

The gift of the Holy Spirit empowers us to be strong women of God, even in our moments of weakness. In the bible, Jesus promised his followers, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, or Strengthener) that He may remain with you forever; the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit (John 15:26-27)

26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

John 16:1-15 New International Version (NIV)

16 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Jesus Prays for His Disciples (John 17:6-19)

“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Jesus Prays for All Believers (John 17:20-26)

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

I pray that as we will continue to be careful in our walk by faith and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ, we will not allow desires for power to draw us into Satan’s trap.

Can you keep up? Faster than a speeding……How did he do it? EMIT vs Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

The beauty and speed of light and its importance affects us every day.

It shapes every aspect of our existence, from our religion to our sex drive and understanding light has led scientists to our modern knowledge of the universe.

Chamber of Commerce

We use light in art, science, different industries like movies, entertainment, cosmetics, jewelry etc.

Angelina Jolie as Master Tigress in Kung Fu Panda
Angelina Jolie as Master Tigress in Kung Fu Panda

When God said, “Let there be Light!”, the creation of the universe began according to the book of Genesis.

The light of the Sun gives life to our world.

We can even go a step further and look into photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis if we remember from High School, it is when certain organisms make their own food by capturing energy from the sun. For example, organisms like trees and grass are called producers and during photosynthesis they convert the energy in sunlight into chemical energy by locking it within the bond of the food molecules they synthesize.

There is also artificial lighting which of course does not even come close to the broad spectrum of sunlight and is definitely not close to its brightness.

Fluorescent light emit light in much narrower wavelengths, since they glow from the light given off by specific atomic elements, which apparently is usually mercury or sodium.

It is also no secret that lovers love candlelight.

Not only is it more romantic than electric lightning, the soft, yellowish, orange glow of candlelight seemingly makes your skin tone appear softer, smoother and warmer. Infinitely 120% more touchable.

It may even generate a lovely sparkle in your dates eyes. Hhmmm…. very interesting.

Think about it! The light of fire is the basis of all human civilization. The metaphors of light and vision are so fundamental that we use them in our everyday language.

For instance, we say, seeing is believing, and seeing is so important to us.
So necessary in fact that many of us find ourselves wearing an assortment of eyeglasses or spectacles to compensate for our blurred vision.

The earliest “eyeglasses” were made of gemstones worn by the emperor Nero.

People even began using glass lenses in the Middle Ages to help them focus their vision so that they could read better.

Eyeglasses, or spectacles, have been in use in both Europe and China since approximately the thirteenth century. Certainly, the travels of Marco Polo and the other traders played a role in the exchange. However, we not only see, we look, behold, observe, scrutinize, study, stare, examine etc.

Light is the difference between life and death. It has shaped our world and shaped us. I also believe that vision is a gift and is the most important of our five senses.

Speaking of light-Nothing in the universe travels faster than light. When someone tells you that you run nearly as fast as the speed of light or even as fast as a speeding bullet, you know your fast!

In the incredible vacuum of space, light travels at a velocity of approximately 186,000 miles per second; this is the universe ideal speed limit.

I was also fascinated to find out that even specialist and experts at places like MIT and Caltech have been seen wearing T-Shirts which state:

“186,000 miles per second, it’s not just a good idea, it’s the law!” Lol!

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States, MIT adopted a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction in applied science and engineering.

They revel in a culture of learning by doing. In 30 departments across five schools, their students combine analytical rigor with curiosity, playful imagination, and an appetite for solving the hardest problems in service to society.

Open Learning

MIT is pioneering new ways of teaching and learning, on our campus and around the world, by inventing and leveraging digital technologies. MITx, the Institute’s portfolio of massively open online courses, offers flexible access to a range of interactive courses developed and taught by instructors from MIT. Another MIT innovation — the MicroMasters credential — is increasingly recognized by industry leaders hiring new talent. And MIT’s original digital learning option, OpenCourseWare, continues to offer teachers and learners worldwide the materials for more than 2,000 MIT courses, freely available online.

According to, MIT has an admissions rate of 6.7%. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is one of the most selective schools in the U.S. MIT is especially famous for its top STEM programs in fields like engineering and computer science, but it does have programs in other fields—even in humanities subjects, such as creative writing.

Stated vs. Unstated Admissions Requirements

Because the admissions process at top universities like MIT is holistic and so competitive, there is a difference between stated and unstated admissions requirements.

Selective college admissions are a two-step process. First, you must meet the minimum academic qualifications. This includes explicitly-stated requirements, such as the classes you must take and implicit minimum standardized test scores and GPAs for students of your background. Then, among students who meet the threshold, holistic admissions factors such as essays, your extracurricular profile, and other, more subjective qualities come into play.

Suicide and Mental Health

A number of student deaths in the late 1990s and early 2000s resulted in considerable media attention to MIT’s culture and student life. After the alcohol-related death of Scott Krueger in September 1997 as a new member at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, MIT began requiring all freshmen to live in the dormitory system.

The 2000 suicide of MIT undergraduate Elizabeth Shin drew attention to suicides at MIT and created a controversy over whether MIT had an unusually high suicide rate. In late 2001 a task force’s recommended improvements in student mental health services were implemented, including expanding staff and operating hours at the mental health center.

These and later cases were significant as well because they sought to prove the negligence and liability of university administrators.

So clearly from all the information gathered, we’ve got experts and specialist at MIT doing their research on many topics, but recently I was reading about EMIT (Enzyme-multiplied immunoassay technique).

EMIT (Enzyme-Multiplied Immunoassay Technique)

These are test that use various DNA techniques to amplify trace chemicals in urine. Apparently, it has become the standard approach for screening large amounts of urine samples.

According to my most resent findings, in 1986 the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) instituted mandatory drug screening of student athletes.

Eventually many colleges and universities implemented their own drug testing policies.
In addition to its use in collegiate sports, drug testing is conducted in professional and Olympic sports as well as in the work place.

EMIT can be used in a robot tester that employs a light sensor to read urine samples and prints out a value for each of five or six drugs present, it can process 18,000 samples an hour. Wow!

The detection period depends on the type and dose of the drug. EMIT is more than 98% accurate, with error biased towards nondetection.

I also learnt that because EMIT responds to a broad range of opiate and amphetamine compounds, it sometimes produces a positive result for harmless prescription drugs such as herbal teas and poppy seeds.

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

For this reason, samples that show a positive result on EMIT are then retested by more cumbersome but 100% accurate procedures such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Try saying that three times in a row. Lol!

Simply eating things like poppy seeds may trigger a positive signal on EMIT, but apparently the confirmation test tells that a key heroin breakdown product (6-0-acetylmorphine) is not present. This is very important!

Experts state that the tests are highly reliable and any corporation, university, college or sport athlete that has gone through the process should rest assure that they won’t be wrongly accused.

Fifty Shades of Play: Happy Valentines Day!

Like many philosophical schools in the Hellenistic world, the Epicureans were followers of a school of philosophy founded in the fourth century BC by Epicurus (341-271 BC).

fifty ed

The Epicureans focused on the question: What is the good life?

Their answer was, “The good life was a life of happiness.

Happiness was the presence of pleasure, and the absence of pain.

However, their psychology of pleasures and pains were unique.

They divided pleasures into static pleasures and kinetic pleasures.

Enjoying a kinetic pleasure involved having a desire, satisfying that desire, and then experiencing the lack of that desire.

For example, the desire for any food( especially Caribbean cook food) is considered a kinetic pleasure as one becomes hungry, then eats, and is then satisfied.

Enjoying a static pleasure however, would be considered engaging in a philosophical or intellectual discussion.

The more you philosophize, the more you want to continue to discuss and go more in depth.

The word “epicurean” has now come to mean “devoted to the pursuit of sensual pleasure, especially to the enjoyment of good food and comfort”.

Speaking of sensual pleasures, paraphilia is the clinical term for a sexual deviation or sexual perversion that deviates from the standard “normal”.

Some of these sexual fantasies, urges, and behaviors may cause distress and sometimes lead to criminal behavior.

What is abnormal is clear- for example a person who regularly engages in sexual behavior that victimizes others (sadism, pedophilia and exhibitionism).

Please note however that what constitutes as “normal” behavior varies dramatically depending on cultural and religious beliefs.

Also, what may be “normal” enough if restricted to sexual fantasy may be considered deviant or even criminal if acted out.

Some paraphilias may involve degrading oneself or inflicting suffering on one’s sexual partner.

In sexual sadism, the person is sexually aroused by causing psychological or physical pain in another person.

When thoughts or sexual fantasies become preoccupations that overwhelm behavior constrains, serious consequences can occur.

· Exhibitionism is the exposure of one’s genitals to a stranger

· Fetishism is the use of objects to gain sexual satisfaction

· Frotteurism is touching or rubbing against a non-consenting person

· Pedophilia is sexual activity with a prepubescent child

· Sexual masochism is enjoying or craving sexual activity that causes one’s self humiliation or pain

· Sexual sadism is sexual excitement through activity that causes another person pain or humiliation

· Transvestic fetishism is sexual activity by heterosexual males involved in cross-dressing

· Voyeurism is the observing of unsuspecting persons who are nude, disrobing, or involved in sexual activity

While any one of these paraphilias can be a serious mental disorder, it is not uncommon for several of them to occur together.

It’s hard to state the prevalence of paraphilias in the general population because of the very private nature of most of these types of activities.

Most often, it is only after an incident or crime has taken place, that we are able to record information taken from the offenders’ or victims’ memories.

Unfortunately, studies show that approximately 90% of paraphilic activities go undetected and unreported

However, the most dangerous type of Paraphilia is Pedophilia, which involves any kind of sexual behavior with children.

According to my research, some pedophiles rationalize their behavior by saying that they are providing a form of “sex education” for the child and they are doing it in the child’s best interest.

No! Sex with children is and will always be criminal, exploitative and takes unfair and selfish advantage of the child’s innocence and powerlessness.

Child sexual abuse is a complex and serious problem.

A few years ago I attended a Darkness to Light training session at the Red Cross Cayman Islands and was also informed that the training could also be completed online at

At Darkness to Light, their vision is to have a world free of child sexual abuse. A world in which all children are loved, protected, and nurtured, able to grow up healthy, with their sexual boundaries intact. There have also been many cults known to practice such behaviors and many other distorted rituals.

Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones

James Warren Jones was an American religious cult leader who, along with his inner circle, initiated and was responsible for a mass suicide and mass murder in Jonestown, Guyana. Jones was the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple cult which he began in Indiana during the 1950s.

A glaring example is the Jim Jones followers, who willingly drank cyanide-laced Kool-Aid under the influence of a dominant charismatic leader called Jim Jones.

James Warren Jones (May 13, 1931 – November 18, 1978) was an American religious leader, who initiated and was responsible for a mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana.

Can you imagine what else he might have been able to persuade his followers to do? Wow!

Jim Jones achieved notoriety as the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple cult.

Can you imagine what else he might have been able to persuade his followers to do?

I’ve learnt that apparently most people with paraphilias experience them as being a fundamental and necessary part of their makeup.

Further research states that it is very hard to give up a passion, however peculiar and from the perspective of the person with the Paraphilia, often the only “problem” in their view is the restriction imposed by legal criticisms, lack of available cooperative partners, or the public forbidding their standard of unusual sexual desires.

Are you wasting your time? (The Age Clock Concept: In Time with your Lifespan)

We are continuously developing throughout the time of our lifespan and most of us will go through the same system or already established foundation as a child.

I strongly believe however that once we enter into the phase called adulthood, these changes become less predictable and based on the choices we make, the outcomes are more diverse.

In Time

As an adult the major markers in life are closely linked to personal, social and cultural forces or events that take place.
Unfortunately, there are events or crisis in life which were never planned for and this often alter the decisions that we make going forward.

In most cultures the most popular milestones are starting a job or career, getting married, or having a child. Please note however that not all adults progress along the same common path or structure according to “one big common plan”.

Some people marry very young and others do not marry at all. Some young adults have few options and are forced to begin jobs and become independent immediately after high school, while others have the luxury of continuing their education until they have attained their Ph.D., DSc, LP.D., Ed,D. Psy.D or M.D. just to name a few.

Some people may have several children at a young age while others may make a conscious decision to wait until their 30’s or 40’s to have children. Some adults may want children but regrettably cannot have children or perhaps due to their careers in life, they decide not to have children at all.

Despite the various lifestyle choices, we make as adults, there is a form of internal timing that we each use as a measure of our adult development.

In Time

Henry Hamilton has over a century (100 years) on his age clock and in the movie, it is said that he was worth thousands of years.

According to my research, the concept of the age clock is often relied upon to identify the different stages of our adult development.

Age clocks lets us know when certain events in life should occur, relative to standards considered typical of the culture in which the person resides.

If important life events or milestones happen too early or later than expected, some people may experience distress or what we can refer to as a “crisis” and based on what that event is, they may not receive the typical peer support when such developments are normally accomplished.

Biologically, a young woman normally cannot conceive after menopause; and if you think about it, psychologically a young adult might not be prepared to handle the stress and constant pressure of a complex and high-level job.
I firmly believe it’s a fine balance all adults must create in order to shape their lives according to their lifespan.

Speaking of lifespan, the most significant historical change affecting the life course of many people is the increasing length of their lifespan.

For example, perhaps in the 1900’s only about 13% of people were expected to reach 80 or older, now more and more people are expected to reach that age. These developments and others like it have changed how we now define our age clocks and how each culture has adjusted the responsibilities most people are likely to encounter at various points in their adult lifespan.

In the Bible, we have an example of Adam’s family age clock and the written account of his family line in the book of Genesis, Chapter 5.

1. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.

2. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.

3. When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.

4. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters

5. Although, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

Further on in the same chapter between verses 21 to 27 we have an account of the oldest man in the bible.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.

22 After he became the father of Methuselah. Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years.

24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech.

26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters.

27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

Wow! I wonder what the environment was like back then? What did the air smell like? What did the food taste like? What were their lifestyles like in order to preserve and extend their lifespan?

As fascinated as I am by the fantasy of such an extended lifespan, I take heed to what the Apostle Paul said in the bible, in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 3 verses 18 and 19,

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.

19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”.

The Apostle Paul writes that this new world in its present form is passing away, but that the Corinthians can give themselves fully to the work of the Lord since their labor is not in vain.

He gave us practical advice and great insight as we each seek to take up our roles in the world today.

1 Corinthians 1:19,

19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate”.

And the Bible continues from verses 20 to 25 to state:

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,

23 But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,

24 But to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greek, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile”.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.

27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

28 God choose the lowly things of this world and the despised things- and the things that are not- to nullify the things that are,

29 So that no one may boast before him.

30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord”.

So, as we each continue to age or grow older, I believe its important and certainly relevant to create a Professional Portfolio.

The concept of portfolios comes from professions in which the portfolios are used to showcase examples of work or art to prospective clients and employers.

I believe professionals and students alike should be taught how to prepare a portfolio, were they are guided in the selection of materials to be included, they are taught how to recognize the types of capabilities sought by prospective clients and employers and they are shown how to select their best work to illustrate each of their capabilities.

Professional portfolios play a collective or cumulative role and when structured appropriately requires no additional time to be associated with the creation of new products.

In this new technologically advance age, we have become a global society with a global culture and instant communication is now the “new normal”.

In developed countries, knowledge no longer needs to be passed on the traditional way from parent to child, or older adult to an upcoming younger trainee.

Instead, we now have the internet or world wide web- which is changing our work life, making communications between cultures more effective and assisting greatly with trade, business and commerce on a global scale.

Global technology has now provided the necessary bridge to cultural and economic development. Many young adults have been able to make the leap from developing countries to other developing countries through the use of online education and online research of all types.

How do you think computers are affecting the course of our lifespan development? Do you think we have become too dependent and therefore have more time to waste? Or perhaps it’s created more time for social bonding?

I fervently believe however, that whatever your perspective may be, the major milestones in our life are closely linked to the personal, social and cultural choices we make as we move forward in life.

The Fear of Oblivion- Are you Resilient? Lest We Forget: Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day, Resilient

Remembrance Day: Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day is a Memorial Day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the resilient members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. I was pleased to do a more detailed research of the story behind Remembrance Day and it can be found if you read my previous Article, Remembrance Day: Forget Them Not

Remembrance Day: Lest We Forget, Resilient

Remembrance Day: Lest We Forget

Centenary Commemorations for the Armistice

As we approach the centenary commemorations for the Armistice, the world will once again turn its attention to the events of 100 years ago.

Remembrance Day

The Imperial War Museum records and tells the stories of those who have lived, fought and passed in battle since 1914. As the 2 world wars that defined the twentieth century slip from living memory, war memorials maintain their tradition, a roll call of the fallen that reminds us of the fragility of peace. On Remembrance Day, 2 minutes of silence forms a bridge to the past. Gone however not forgotten, we will constantly remember them– those who given a lot for the freedoms we take pleasure in today.

Approximately 1.1million Commonwealth servicemen and women are still commemorated at 23,000 CWGC sites today. Imagine that! But for the Commission, it is also a time to look to the future. How will they continue to maintain those sites? What are the challenges they will face for the next 100 years? The Commonwealth War Graves

Foundation (CWGF) is a charitable foundation that highlights the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) by telling the stories of the 1.7m people the CWGC commemorates. Visit the following link for more information on how you can help:

Even though I have not been able to visit many of the places I have written about, due to today’s technology, I am able to experience and understand the world a lot better. Technological advances have fueled globalization. Most people would agree that we can still get things done around the world more quickly than we previously were able to.

However due to technological pressures to streamline operating standards and procedures, we now run the risk of threatening individual’s livelihood and our societies most precious traditions, values and beliefs. The fear of oblivion is like a turbulent storm seen from the distance but fast approaching.

Perhaps the most powerful of the global changes we now face are the incredibly swift and increasingly rapid advances in telecommunications.

Most recently I came across information regarding a twelve-year study of Illinois Bell Telephone employees which I found most useful and informative. The founders of the Innovative Hardiness Institute in Newport Beach, California, stated that more than experience or training, resilience in the face of stressful situations and rapid changes determines whether you ultimately succeed or fail in the workplace. It allows you to thrive even in tumultuous (I like that word) conditions and to turn potential disasters into growth opportunities.

So where does resilience come from?

The Art of being Resilient

According to Deborah M. Khoshaba, who was already a professional psychologist for fifteen years at the time the book “Resilience at Work” was published, and was also a Director of Program Development and Training at the Hardiness Institute, you can learn to be resilient. When a person is under stress or find themselves in a stressful situation, if they are able to cultivate a group of attitudes and skills that help them to build on their stressful circumstances and not to be undermined by the situation, Deborah called that “hardiness”.

Hardiness emerged as the basis for resilience in their twelve-year, longitudinal study of the employees at Illinois Bell Telephone (IBT), as the company and its parent, AT&T, experienced a catastrophic upheaval when telephone services went from being a federally regulated monopoly to being a competitive industry.

Unfortunately, the massive, disruptive changes that followed greatly affected the performance, conduct and heath of two-thirds of the employees in their research at the time and many people fell apart. However, in strong contrast, the resilient third not only survived, but also thrived! They rose to the top of the heap, and felt more enthusiastic and capable than before, as they turned the changes into opportunities. They found that the resilient group had the hardy attitudes of commitment, control and challenge (CCC or Triple C) Lol!

These 3Cs gave them the courage and drive to face the disruptive changes and because of their courage, bravery and motivation, the resilient group was better able to cope with the various challenges by finding solutions to the problems that arose and interacting supportively with those around them. In the twenty years since the IBT project, more than four hundred studies around the world have further validated “hardiness” as the key to resilience.

Salvatore R. Maddi on being resilient

Salvatore R. Maddi, who at the time the book “Resilience at Work” was published, had already obtain his doctorate in clinical psychology from Harvard University in 1960 and began developing the resilience and hardiness approach in 1975. He later founded the Hardiness Institute in 1984.

He has been the author of over 100 papers and is internationally recognized as a leader in psychology, and continues to win prestigious awards for his hardiness-based consulting and research work. An international survey done in 1986 named him among the top 175 psychologists in the world.

Considering that it is now 2018, I am “tickled pink” to be learning from the wealth of knowledge he was kind enough to share with the world. He clearly has no reason to fear oblivion. I fervently believe his research will stand the test of time.

“All knowledge cannot be expressed in words, yet our education is based almost exclusively on its written or spoken forms…. But the artist, dancer or spiritual person have learned to develop the nonverbal portion of intelligence.”

Robert Ornstein

Speaking of spirituality, do you know who and what else will never have to fear oblivion? The Bible and the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible has always been and I strongly believe, will always be the best-seller year after year until the end of time and is peppered with many prophecies.

In our fallen and double-minded world, we can either be encouraged or terrified by prophecy.
In 2 Peter 1:19 of the New International Version (NIV) it states,

“19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shinning in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts”.

And it continues to solidify verse 19 in verses 20 and 21 by saying the following:

“20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.

21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit”.

In the Old Testament there are many stories of the prophets of Israel. One story in particular features the Priest Ezekiel who was among the Judeans that Nebuchadnezzar brought to Babylon in 597 BC.

Five years into their exile, God called Ezekiel to go to Israel and “speak my words to them” or prophesy.

The Priest Ezekiel often spoke his messages by composing exceptionally polished poetic oracles which he would either speak or perhaps sing to the public. He was also known to be a very talented and creative individual and told many of his stories with symbolic meanings, symbolic actions and often described and demonstrated his extraordinary visions that he had received to the public using his various abilities.

It’s interesting to note however in Ezekiel Chapter 2 verses 14, that when he was called to be a prophet, he wasn’t exactly jumping with joy. It says he went on his mission in bitterness and anger.

I believe there are still true prophets among us today, however we need to be cautious of people- even those inside the Church, who astonish us with their exploits.

Astonishment or amazement is not enough. I sincerely believe it wise for us as believers to observe their lives and determine if they have truly been transformed. Many people agree that we should be able to see conviction, repentance, love and unity taken place within their lives.

I strongly believe that people can be very susceptible or naïve when they have never experienced the power of the Lord. When supernatural things take place that they don’t understand or can not explain, they may call it divine or of God. But watch out!

Just because a person believes in Christ does not automatically qualify him or her to receive everything that is divine.

I believe spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy is very much needed in the church today, but many who are ignorant regarding how God choses to deliver the Spirit, may feel that they can imitate the Spirit. They may even believe it’s a gift that can be purchased.

But the bible said that for every supernatural gift that comes from God, satan has made a substitute. Ancient diviners or psychics have foretold events by countless methods but the Priest Ezekiel has warned us against this in the entire book of Ezekiel Chapter 13. It reads as follows:

1 The word of the Lord came to me:

2 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who are now prophesying. Say to those who prophesy out of their own imaginations: ‘Hear the word of the Lord!’

3 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing!

4 Your prophets, Israel, are like jackals among ruins.

5 You have not gone up to the breaches in the wall to repair it for the people of Israel so that it will stand firm in the battle on the day of the Lord.

6 Their visions are false and their divination a lie. Even though the Lord has not sent them, they say, “The Lord declares,” and expect him to fulfill their words.

7 Have you not seen false visions and uttered lying divinations when you say, “The Lord declares”, though I have not spoken?

8 “Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because of your false words, and lying visions, I am against you, declares the Sovereign Lord.

9 My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

10 “Because they lead my people astray, saying, “Peace,” when there is no peace, and because, when a flimsy wall is built, they cover it with white-wash,

11 Therefore, tell those who cover it with white-wash that it is going to fall. Rain will come in torrents, and I will send hailstones hurtling down, and violent winds will burst forth.

12 When the wall collapses, will people not ask you, “Where is the white-wash you covered it with?”

13 “Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my wrath I will unleash a violent wind, and in my anger hailstones and torrents of rain will fall with destructive fury.

14 I will tear down the wall you have covered with white-wash and will level it to the ground so that its foundation will be laid bare. When it falls, you will be destroyed in it; and you will know that I am the Lord.

15 So, I will pour out my wrath against the wall and against those who covered it with whitewash. I will say to you, “The wall is gone and so are those who whitewashed it,

16 Those prophets of Israel who prophesied to Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her when there was no peace, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

17 “Now, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people who prophesy out of their own imagination. Prophesy against them

18 And say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to the women who sew magic charms on all their wrists and make veils of various lengths for their heads in order to ensnare people. Will you ensnare the lives of my people but preserve your own?

19 You have profaned me among my people for a few handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to my people, who listen to lies, you have killed those who should not have died and have sparred those who should not live.

20 “Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against your magic charms with which you ensnare people like birds and I will tear them from your arms; I will set free the people that you ensnare like birds.

21 I will tear off your veils and save my people from your hands, and they will no longer fall prey to your power. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

22 Because you disheartened the righteous with your lies, when I had brought them no grief, and because you encouraged the wicked not to turn from their evil ways and so save their lives,

23 Therefore, you will no longer see false visions or practice divination. I will save my people from your hands. And then you will know that I am the Lord”.

Wow! That’s some serious revelations right there!

However, as I stated previously, the Apostle Peter calls prophecy a “light that shines in a dark place” (II Peter 1:19).

I also believe that even though their may be different interpretations of prophetic theories, some things are still held in common by all legitimate people involved:

1 Jesus Christ, Son of God, is Savior and Lord
2 The Bible is the Word of God
3 Jesus Christ is coming back again (Titus 2:13, 1 Peter 1:3 and 3:15, John 3:2-3 etc.)

So, I ask these simple questions. Do you fear oblivion? Are you living your life with purpose and would you classify yourself as resilient?

Once again, we see in the Bible, around 65 AD, where the Apostle Peter, who was an eyewitness to the ministry of Jesus, was imprisoned in Rome by the Emperor Nero.

During that time, he realized that he would soon be executed, but he knew it was of great importance that the ministry of Jesus be confirmed and therefore he once again wrote another letter to the believers, confirming Jesus’ ministry and warning against false teachers.

In powerful imagery Peter describes the false teachers’ destructive effect on the community and the judgement that awaits them.

Peter knew that the Messiah’s return had only been delayed because God wanted everyone to repent and I still believe that to be true today. So, in the NIV bible in 2 Peter Chapter 3:1-9 it reads,

“1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.

2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.

3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.

4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation”.

5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.

6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.

7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgement and destruction of the ungodly.

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

As I have become more involved in the mentorship of young Caymanians in the Cayman Islands, I have come to realize that in order to become a more effective teacher and mentor, I will need to get deeper in the word of God. And guess what else has also become apparent? Mentorship and discipleship go hand in hand.

Discipleship teaches us how to understand God’s word and pray, while mentoring demonstrates how to live life.
The Bible is full of mentoring examples: Elijah mentored Elisha, Moses mentored Joshua, Jesus mentored the disciples and there was even the story of Mary and her cousin Elizabeth.

You know what else I found out? The Lord created women to desire to be in relationships. Not only passionate couple relationships, but sibling relationships as well as close friendships.

I believe He felt it was healthy and beneficial for us to partner with each other and offer support and assistance, when necessary, along life’s journey.

I pray that the Lord our Savior Jesus Christ will continue to see it beneficial to guide and protect me and my family as we blossom in grace and love and grow from strength to strength in faith.

To him be the glory both now and forever!

Would you be considered a gift that keeps on giving?

Have you ever placed significance on your birth-date? At Christmas time many Christians around the world celebrates the most important gift, the birth of Christ. There is debate by some as to the exact date of his birth. There is debate as to origin of Christmas.

However, there is no doubt that he was born both from a biblical and secular view point. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who came to earth in human form for one main purpose-to be the sacrificial lamb who would take away the sins of the world. I am thankful to God for his gift to mankind.

We are all created for a purpose. Have you found your purpose? Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”.

I especially like that verse because I was born in the month of August on the 28th day. I love it!

We each were given talents and abilities. I believe we are all gifts to this world and gifts don’t necessarily have to be the ones under the tree. Try this exercise. Place yourself under your Christmas tree-and think! I am a gift!

CLM Publishing, Gifts that keep on giving

CLM Publishing

Imagine yourself as a product. What words would be used by your promoters to market you? Would you be described as optimistic, creative, interesting, adventurous, tolerant, likeable and generous?

Hypothetically, those born close to Christmas Day could be considered double gifts. Hhmmm…I know many people who fall within this category. However, the question is- are they required to do double the work? (Lol).

There is not one of God’s children who cannot afford to give something to His work. You may think you can’t afford to give, or you may not be able to give a lot at first, but God blesses everybody that gives. If you’re not rich, that’s all the more reason to give, so God can bless you and help you have more.

I’ve come to realize over time that God’s finances work opposite from the worlds. The world says, “When I’ve got my first million, billion or even trillion, then I’ll start giving.” But the Lord says, “START GIVING what you’ve GOT NOW, and then I’ll give you more.”

Man says, “Me first. Self-preservation is the first law of nature.” But God says, “Put Me and Mine first, and I’ll take care of you afterwards” (Matthew 6:33). God’s way to plenty is to give sacrificially of what you now have. “There is one who scatters, yet increases more; and there is one who withholds more than is right, but it leads to poverty” (Proverbs 11:24).

The faster you give it away and share it, the more He’ll heap it on and the richer you’ll become so you can share more. Covetousness hoards itself poor, but charity gives itself rich!

Most of us aren’t challenged by monumental crises and most of us will never have great influence, power or wealth. However, I strongly believe we are all called to be a blessing in some kind of capacity.

I can think of many people within the Cayman Islands community who give tirelessly to many charities and organizations, whose lives are dedicated to being a blessing to others.

Most recently I have noticed many people, who most would consider “foreigners”, extending their time, money and sincere willingness to the expansion and betterment of these beautiful Islands.

It is such an inspiration and a testament to the universal heart of who people truly are no matter where they have decided to call their home.

I am honored that they now consider the Cayman Islands their home.

There are also well-known billionaires who are famously known for their charitable endeavors.

From a poor Mississippi farm, Oprah Winfrey became a legendary talk show host. She is now labeled or known as the “Queen of All Media”. Her life story tells us of a young lady who rose from poverty to become the most-watched daytime television talk show host.

Oprah Winfrey Gifts that keeps on giving

Oprah Winfrey Network and Magazines

According to my most recent research, Oprah Winfrey was born on a small farm in Mississippi to a single mother, and was initially raised by her grandmother, who could only afford to dress her in potato sacks.

Unfortunately, she had a difficult, unstable childhood, often with little supervision, and was molested by family members. In her teen years, her father made education a focus. Hallelujah!

See my previous article Smooth Criminal/Love the way you Lie: Traumatic Bonding which illustrates abusive behaviors and where you can find help.

She won a speaking contest and subsequently a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. She began working in local media as a teenager and eventually landed a job as an anchor on A.M. Chicago, a morning talk show. Cool!

Her style soon captivated millions of TV audiences and she turned the show, which was quickly syndicated, into a smash hit. Not long after she was offered an acting role in the screen adaptation of The Color Purple, which catapulted the start of her acting career.

Most recently, she starred in another movie called A Wrinkle in Time.

Time Magazine, gift that keeps on giving

Time Magazine

I loved that movie!

Once again, another gift doing what she does best!

Inspiring the young and adding well deserved value to the older generation. She is definitely “Queen” status!

The Oprah Winfrey Show has now become her signature success, with 10 million viewers daily. She is the third woman in history to own and produce her own show. Her name has become an empire. Forbes estimates her net worth to be $2.8 billion (2018).

Bill and melinda Gates Foundation

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Did you also know that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the wealthiest charitable foundation by endowment ($40.3 billion USD)

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, previously branded as the ‘William H. Gates Foundation’, is a private foundation founded by Bill and Melinda Gates.

It was launched in 2000, and is said to be the largest private foundation in the United States, holding US$50.7 billion in assets. Wow!

Melinda Gates

Melinda Gates with President Obama

Throughout her life and career, Melinda Gates has strived to be a voice for marginalized people around the world, working to the bridge the gap of inequality, especially for women. For her, she says, it is a responsibility that comes with being Melinda Gates.

“I think you grow into a name over time. It’s taken me quite some time honestly.”

Gates tells ABC News’ Chief Business, Technology and Economics correspondent, Rebecca Jarvis on an episode of the “No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis” podcast.

“I’m in this position by luck. No other reason. I fell in love with Bill Gates. He fell in love with me. We decided to get married … if you’re in this position you have to do something for the women that you’ve met.”

Mrs. Gates began her career at Microsoft in 1987 and worked her way up to become the General Manager of Information Products where she eventually managed a team of almost 2,000 people. It’s there that she met her future husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and the two were wed in 1994.

When she decided to leave the workforce, she says her husband was shocked.
According to Rebecca Jarvis’s podcast, Melinda stated,

“I actually shocked him when I told him I was going to leave. I had already made that decision and he was completely shocked because he knew how much I loved my career”.

Despite leaving Microsoft, Gates always knew she would eventually go back into the workforce in some capacity and she says it was her husband who actually gave her the push to go back “maybe even sooner” than she would have.

Today she is the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is one of the largest private foundations in the United States working to reduce inequality around the world.

Cayman Islands

But it is her passion for helping women that led to the creation of Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company she founded three years ago to focus on women’s equality issues in the United States and to increase the number of women in the technology sector.

“I would often be flying home from these trips in the developing world thinking about equality and realizing we don’t actually have equality for women anywhere yet in the world,” she said.

According to various sources online, last year all-female led startups only received approximately about 2.2% of the total $85 billion invested by venture capitalists and for women of color that number drops to about 1%.

Through Pivotal Ventures, Melinda Gates is hoping to raise that percentage by investing in Venture Capitalists (VC’s) who are increasingly supporting female and minority entrepreneurs.

Gates said that the low percentage says more about the investors than the founders.

“I have met women — so many women who feel that they are voiceless; they’re voiceless in their communities, sometimes in their families, they certainly are voiceless on the global stage, she said.

“And so, I have decided that at some point I would have to step into this name and into this role and give them a voice.”

“That’s what I do now, no matter what room I walk into these days,” Gates added.

Talk about being a gift that keeps on giving!

If you can find both your passion and a way to share it with others, you’ll get twice the benefit.

Dr. Martin Seligman, regarded as the founder of the field of positive psychology, says he discovered that during the first positive psychology class he ever taught- students were asked to do one pleasurable activity and write up their experiences. The results were dramatic.

The pleasurable activities (hanging out with friends or family, eating great food, watching a movie or even exercising) paled in comparison to the effects of doing just one kind action.

Someone once said that there’s no greater gift than giving from your heart.

There have been and still are many people and organizations that have been gifts in my life- my family and friends, my past and present teachers, my past and present employees, all the churches of the Cayman Islands and the Cayman Islands Community.

I still believe that because of their collective support, I am still able to continue to exercise my faith and the purpose that God has for my life.

So, I passionately say, you must find your true purpose, live it, do it, give it and be it!
Just “B”!

You will benefit others and the by-product is a far richer and rewarding life.

If you are obedient to your natural and spiritual gifts as well as your talents, you will never get tired of doing it. This doesn’t mean it won’t be difficult or challenging, but you will become successful and fulfilled because you are finally aligned with your purpose.

Holy Bible

Holy Bible

For we are more than conquerors! As I stated earlier from Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things, I repeat all things-God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”.

And as verse 30 continues to state, “And those he called, he also justifies; those he justifies, he also glorifies.

It is God who justifies. So, because of Jesus everything and anything will work for good as we love God.

World of Dance

Dancing away the Depression: Discovering your unique Talents

The creative art of dancing is a beautiful way of self expression and is just one of the many ways we were gifted by the Creator.

In Exodus 31:3, The Lord spoke to Moses saying,

“And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of workmanship”

In the same way God has placed amazing talents within each of us, but it is our responsibility to discover them.

The last hundred years have seen dance become an increasingly integral element of popular culture. From ballroom dancing to breakdancing.

Dance is a beautiful way to communicate and gives way to self-expression. It’s also good for the mind, soul and body.

Now you know you can’t talk about dancing without mentioning Michael Jackson!

In 1983 he was asked to perform alongside his brothers for a TV show to celebrate 25 years of Motown and it was in front of one of the largest TV audiences ever for a variety show, Michael Jackson unveiled a dance routine in which he appeared to move across the stage without lifting his feet from the floor. Later known as the moonwalk, it became his trademark. Cool!

I love dancing, it’s in my blood! It runs through my veins and circulates through my arteries and pumps life, hope and beautiful possibilities of creativity in my life.

As a born Jamaican I am naturally very gifted in this area.

Jamaica is a beautiful country with a rich history and public celebrations are still common occurrences.

Olaudah Equiano, the Ibo ex-slave, wrote in 1789,

“We are almost a nation of dancers, musicians, and poets. Thus, every great event, such as a triumphant return from battle or other causes of public rejoicing, is celebrated in public dances, which are accompanied with songs and music suited to the occasion”.

His statement is still very much true in Jamaica’s culture today.

I also learnt that there was such a thing called the rave and club culture in Britain and it was quite a phenomenon.

According to my most recent findings, the first raves were in warehouses around the outskirts of Britain’s industrialized towns and cities or at secret open-air venues.

These parties were attracting thousands of dancers in the 1988. The rave was more than a simple dance party, it was seeking to lift the audience into an altered physical and mental state.

The mixture of a sensual location, powerful sound systems, theatrical lightening in addition to the recreational use of the drug ecstasy lead dancers into something approaching a trance-like state.

Unfortunately, many drugs such as ecstasy, LSD, PCP and certain mushrooms are known to cause delusion and hallucinations. These mind-altering substances produce temporary psychotic symptoms, either during intoxication or withdrawal.

As much as I believe dancing is great for depression, I strongly suggest no one add any of the above substances to the experience.

Research states that there are four major triggers of human depression- the loss of a loved one, a stress hat can’t be handled, a loss of status, or a feeling of guilt.

When depressed, you are likely to have delusions of unreasonable worthlessness and guilt, delusions of hopelessness and perhaps suicidal tendencies.

Also, sometimes being in an unhealthy relationship can cause depression and other abnormal behaviors.

See my previous article: Smooth Criminal/Love the way you Lie: Traumatic Bonding.

Depression is a serious mental illness and should not be taken lightly and can even be coupled with psychotic features.

For example, a shy eighteen -year-old student from a small town begins his freshman year at a large state university and is increasingly overwhelmed by the workload in his grueling prelaw courses.

Prior to his first set of midterms, he becomes extremely distraught and agitated, develops the delusion that his roommates are plotting to murder him in his sleep, and is fond running naked in the streets to escape them.

Guess what else I found out, childbirth is also another important stressor that can trigger a brief psychotic disorder. It has been estimated that one or two deliveries out of every thousand are complicated by postpartum psychoses.

See my other article “Discover the Yello or “Blues” in You: Royal Labor Pains” where I touched a little on the complications of Postpartum Depression.

Your mental health is just as important as the health of your body and with the latest technology becoming available, hopefully more and more people will be able to afford better health care.

So what is this technology I am referring to you may ask? The Blockchain Technology of course!

Blockchain in Health Care

John Halamka is Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, a Harvard University teaching hospital, a position that he has held since 1998. He has also held the position of CIO for Harvard Medical School from 2001 through 2012.

Mr. Halamka recently assumed responsibility as Editor-in-Chief of the new academic journal, Blockchain in Healthcare Today.

However, according to Randy Bean’s interview in the August 2018 issue of the Forbes Magazine, blockchain is ideal for ensuring data integrity where control is decentralized. Mr. Halamka also cited three prominent opportunities:

  1. Medical Records. When a medical record is generated and signed, it can be written to the blockchain, which will provide absolute proof and confidence that a medical record cannot be changed. The integrity of the medical record is ensured. The same concept can be applied to clinical trials. This has impact in legal cases as well where the integrity of the medical record is pivotal.
  2. Consent management. In the current healthcare environment where every state has different privacy and consent regulations, blockchain could be used to record patient consent for purposes of data sharing. Any party seeking to exchange medical data about a patient could check the blockchain for permission to do so.
  3. Micropayments. The idea that patients might be incented is gaining traction. If a patient follows a care plan, keeps their appointments and stays healthy, there might be rewards offered through the blockchain. Similarly, patients might be rewarded for contributing their data to clinical trials and clinical research using the same approach.

Life has been busy with work and school however it has been good. My daughter as some may remember as Little Red is now a senior and has just been accepted into the University that I attend. She also was given a $32,000 academic scholarship. We are so proud of her. She will be majoring in biology with an emphasis in health science and minoring in psychology. Yay little Red.
