I am Scottish! Born and raised in Scotland for the first 44 years of my life, I have retained a certain mentality and approach to life that is not shared by many people who were born and raised in America. When I became an American – the legal way – I swore allegiance to the flag and what it stood for but, deep inside, I was and still am 100% Scottish. I am a Scottish-American, just like any African-American, etc. We adopt the country, we do not assimilate and the country does not adopt us.
Scots ARE people persons! We just do not suffer fools gladly, although we would still care for and help them out. We ARE a friendly people and would go the extra mile to help others, especially those down on their luck. It is how we are raised and where we have come from. However, there are too many people appearing among us who are not more deserving of our compassion and sympathetic understanding than our unequivocal love. That, to me, is such a shame because I know and believe that people are capable of so much more!
