In a day when the emphasis in church is “casual” (clothes, music, etc.), the old and reverent hymns seem to be on the way out. “Our Hymns Our Heritage” is a great read on how the old hymns came about. The book is over 250 pages, covers over 100 hymns and is organized by chapter (hymn):
– Name of hymn.
– The actual hymn itself.
– How the hymn came about.
– Author of the hymn.
– Other pertinent information.
What I like about this title:
– Covers many of the old hymns in different season (Christmas, Easter, etc.) and different areas (praise, repentance, testimony, thanksgiving, etc.).
– Like reading the actual hymn.
– Very good history of the hymn (author, how it came about, etc.).
– Very good variety of hymns covered.
– Good footnotes and helpful topical index.
Really good read and highly recommended. I was given a review copy by Moody Publishers in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
