“The Complete Bible Commentary” by George Williams is a great read for anyone looking for a one volume commentary. Indeed, any commentary recommended by Billy Graham has to be considered! I recently used this commentary to help me prepare for a Sunday School lesson on 1 Kings 11 – Solomon’s many wives and concubine and God’s eventual judgement. After using this commentary to prepare for the lesson and reading more parts of the commentary, here’s my comments:
– Get past the archaic language (originally it was written many years ago) and you will read many good spiritual nuggets that as relevant today as it was when Williams and during biblical times.
– Good introduction to each biblical book.
– Seems to be well-grounded in the author’s respect for the Bible.
– While not every individual verses are addressed, most seem to be summarized.
– Does go deeper than some other commentaries seem to go.
While one may not agree with all of the author’s comments, those who are true believers in Jesus Christ will greatly appreciate the author’s insights. Recommended and will be often used in the future. I was given a copy by Kregel in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
