Calling In Context by Susan Maros is an interesting read for how social factors (location, race, culture, economic factors, etc.) shape our calling for life. While many books approach the subject from an American WASP perspective, this title is unique in that it considers many factors outside an American WASP upbringing.
Many things to like about this title:
– Unique perspectives from different cultures.
– Book is very well organized and relatively easy to read.
– Helpful description of “mental maps” that shape our worldview.
– Good description of the 5 characteristics of a theological environment that influences our calling.
– Good summary of how racial and ethnic identity shapes our calling.
– Describes how poverty can shape vocational formation.
– Interesting anecdotes of how people received their calling (unique and not a one size fits all).
– Good end of chapter questions.
Interesting read from a different perspective. I was given a review copy by IVP in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
