Knowing Sin by Mark Jones is a great read on an comfortable and yet often overlooked topic in today’s Christianity – sin. The author pulls no punches and accurately describes the nature of sin and our sin nature. Just under 200 pages, many topics are covered, including:

    – Blessings (like Adam’s free will) can turn out to be a curse.
    – Despite other people’s influence, we are still responsible for our own sin (can’t pass the buck).
    – 2 ways sin is passed on to others.
    – Total depravity is the inability for a person, apart from Jesus Christ, to produce a spiritual life.
    – Sin not only includes acts of commission, but the desire to sin.
    – Various ways the Pharisees in the New Testament broke the 10 Commandments (and they were supposed to be the religious leaders and examples!).
    – The futility of denying sin.
    – God, not religious works, can free us from sin.
    – 3 types of hypocrites.

The book is easy to read and understand, convicting, and up front on addressing a most difficult but important subject. I really like the author’s writing style (clear, biblical, and to the point without mincing words). Very good read for anyone wanting to learn more about the subject or needs to learn more about this difficult topic and reason why Jesus Christ came into the world to be born, crucified, buried, and resurrected to pay the penalty for our sin that we could never pay ourselves through religious effort, kind intentions, etc.

Highly recommended and will be read again. I was given a review copy by Moody Publishers in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
