Maria…..

We have a local taco shop that has been there for over 30 years. They are not large and fancy…..but they have the best Carne Asada/ Salsa/Guacamole/ Beans that you can find anywhere. They make these giant breakfast burritos which they use French fries instead of potatoes like other places….but they still taste amazing. Anyhow…..after making many visits through out the years we have gotten to know the owners. Their sons went to high school with my oldest sons. And their sons started working there when they were old enough. The parents….are hard workers. They show up everyday and work sometimes 12 hours daily. They have a son they are putting through college so they work hard for their children to succeed. I would order a tray of their Carne Asada when I would go visit my family in South Dakota and freeze it for the trip. My family would always order from them when they lived here and for them to get a taste of San Diego made them so happy. I would ask….how do you make your beans?…and they told me…they just boil their pinto beans and add just a little lard to them. Not too much because it won’t taste good…it has to be just a little and some salt. And I asked…how do you make your Carne Asada? Just a little salt and pepper and throw it on the grill. They told me EVERYONE always ask them and they can not believe it could be so simple and taste so good.

I have not been there much because of the Covid ordeal but have noticed a few weeks ago that it was a different family member working. My son said he noticed that the parents haven’t been there in the morning…..so I thought maybe they were finally taking time off to just rest since the kids are back from college. But I drove through the other day to get my son burritos and their youngest son was working and he leaned out close to me to tell me his mother Maria passed away 2 weeks ago. She was diagnosed with Covid 3 weeks ago and died a week later. My heart stopped. Maria was the hardest working lady I know. She was only a few years older than me. I feel so sad about this. Her kids are the same age as mine. Her son told me…they decided to sell the place and she was going to work one last week before this happened. No underlying conditions….she was healthy and it killed her in a week.

We still don’t understand all their is to understand about this Disease….which makes it even more scary. Please everyone….be safe and think smart. Think of others……especially those who may be weaker than us.

  1. I knew how this was going to end before I read the ending. That is really sad and at the same time delivers a poignant message to us all. Fortunately, in my social bubble, I know of no one who has contracted Covid. . .yet. I just hope it stays that way.

    1. YES….I hope it stays that way for you to Jules.
My brother who moved to South Dakota just signed up to volunteer to do deliveries for people in Quarantine because of Covid. He is a retired Fireman/ex Marine so it is embedded in him to help. He is overly cautious so I feel really comfortable with him going out there and doing this.

  2. I think the fact that there is so much we still don’t know about Covid-19 is what makes it even more scary. For example, they still aren’t sure you can’t get it once or twice a year, just like you can a bad cold. Imagine something like a bad cold that kills. Scary. In addition, there is research that suggests that even people who don’t show the extreme symptoms, and seem not to react, have internal damage that doesn’t become obvious till the person has a thorough examination or comes down with something latter on and then find that there is lung damage.

So, nobody seems to really be safe from this virus, not even children. This woman that had no pre-existing weakness, at least not that anybody was aware of, passing in a week is an example of just how scary it is.

    1. YES YES YES to all you mention. Scientist are still learning about it and how it may morph and cause different kinds of damage. If in fact this was a man made virus…they sure did create a monster.

      1. By the way, we may sadly have an answer to the question of whether someone can get it more than once:

        https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8658757/Covid-19-strike-twice-33-year-old-man-Hong-Kong-person-reinfected.html?ito=push-notification&ci=29726&si=10262909

Now I realize this is just one article, and not proof on a wide basis, but the implication is that. And what is even more scary is how do you create a vaccine for something that can be contracted twice or more times?? Don’t they use some element of the virus to do vaccines? If so, might it not just add to the susceptibility?

I am not an expert at this sort of thing but it seems to just increase the problem.

  3. I don’t think it was man mad in the sense that some mad scientist brewed it up in a lab, although I could possibly be wrong on that. I do think that our pollution and continued abuse of the atmosphere has caused things to morph and mutant and become worse.
