Left Of Center

If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip
In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip

I will be the first one to admit that sometimes my imagination gets the best of me. I wonder about certain things that probably nobody else cares about. Asking certain questions of myself and about others. Constantly wondering.

I remember one day going into the local Blockbuster with my boyfriend to pick out and watch some movies. I had wanted to rent one of their older movies called “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest.” Probably everyone is familiar with this movie but at the time I was not. So I asked a worker at Blockbuster where this movie was located. Remember when they had the empty case of the movie cover itself and behind it was the Blockbuster case that contained the movie? I certainly do. Well the movie had already been checked out.

When coincidences like that occur I find it very strange. This was not a popular movie at the time. It had been released mid 70’s. Still, I had to ponder who would rent this movie? Why did they rent this movie? I know my reasoning for renting the movie. I was born in the early 70’s when we had limited shows we were able to watch on TV. Who can forget Happy Days, The Brady Bunch, Eight Is Enough, One Day At A Time and the list goes on and on…

I think that somehow
Somewhere inside of us
We must be similar
If not the same

I know it was a popular movie when it was released but the title is what really stuck in my mind. Very unique. Once I saw the movie and what it entailed I began to ponder this question even more. This movie was heartbreaking. You bond with the character of Jack Nicholson and begin to understand why he has broken in to an institution for the mentally ill. That he is a free spirit and is trying to help the others who are institutionalized. Then the wrenching ending where he is subjected to a lobotomy. Redered a vegetable and ultimately met his demise. If you have seen this movie and cringe at the ending then I would advise you to never watch the movie “Francis” which deals with the same repulsive subject matter.

I only saw this movie one time and that was enough. When the movie had finished playing I felt depressed and in shock that society back in the day used such medieval treatments upon others. Fast forward that way of thinking to whom would want to rent a movie of that caliber? Maybe the person who was checking out the movie before me had never seen it either. Although, maybe they had. Still, it would have been interesting to actually know who rented the movie before me. Their reason to check it out..

But I’m only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Wondering about you
Wondering about you
