Finding current technologies that can be used to appropriately support differentiated instruction and enrich student learning styles is very important for educators. Not all students learn the same way or at the same speed, it is important for teachers to find ways to differentiate their instruction to meet the students where they are at (Drexel University, n.d.). The use of different types of technology is one of the most commonly used strategy in classrooms today and it is important to find the right technology that works for the students in the classroom. Loom, Kahoot, and a Choice Board, are 3 examples that can be used to differentiate instruction in any classroom. The 3 technologies I have chosen to discuss are all user friendly, cost effective, can provide differentiation, and can be used in any content area as well as grade level.
Loom is a free online screen recording tool which allows teachers to pre-record instruction for students to watch. The recorded videos can be instantly shared with students. Students can watch the videos if instruction was missed due to an absence or rewatch the video as needed. Sometimes students need to hear and see directions a second or even third time before comprehending the information. Loom allows students to watch the videos at any time and for as many times as needed. Students with hearing issues can use their headphones to obtain better audio quality. Educators can utilize Loom as a way to provide feedback. I had a professor submit a vocal recording of her feedback to an assignment which was very valuable. For students taking classes online this was a way to connect to her students on a more personal level. I have found Loom to be very user friendly, when the program is opened there will be a button to push for record with options to edit or start over. Videos can be downloaded and a link can be shared. It is a free resource for up to 25 videos and each video can be 5 minutes in length. Loom works with Mac, Windows, and Chromebook and is appropriate for all grade levels and content areas.
The second technology I feel is very beneficial to all students is a choice board. A choice board is an interactive document which allows access to a variety of resources hand picked by the teacher, I have personally created a choice board within a google document that was then shared onto a schoology page. The choice board can many different categories of resources, to name a few; read aloud books, virtual field trips, enrichment games, mindfulness videos, or audio books. Having a variety of resources readily available to students ensures that all types of learners will be accounted for. There is no cost to creating a choice board other than access to a computer and internet. Each link will direct students to the exact site that is listed on the choice board. This makes it extremely easy for users. Choice boards can be time consuming at first but once a teacher has compiled a list of resources for students it will be a much quicker process. A choice board can provide students with a range of options for students to show what they know, practice a skill, or complete an assignment or project. This form of technology is not only easy to access but user friendly and can be utilized in any content area.
Kahoot is the third technology I believe to be an engaging way to provide differentiation. Kahoot offers educators a simple plan for free with the availability to upgrade for monthly fee. Kahoot has a library full of fun and interactive games for students to practice learning content. Kahoot provides a gamification aspect to learning which is interesting and engaging for all students. Today video games are extremely popular amongst students of all ages and this is a way for teachers to incorporate learning and games. The free library has access to games from all different content areas such as art, math, and science. A math teacher teaching about geometry can have students reinforce and enhance their learning experience by playing a SpongeBob theme shape game. If an educator is able to subscribe to the access pass there are more features available such as more variety of activities, videos, assignments for homework, self-guided learning, and provide reports of learning.
I have touched on 3 types of technological learning experiences used to differentiation instruction for all learning types. It is important to realize that there are so many more options out there for educators. With some research, time, and effort teachers can find the right tools to provide learning opportunities to reinforce and build upon learned knowledge. Many of the technologies available to educators can be used across all content areas, are user friendly, and encourages engagement.
