Knowing that we focused on differentiation throughout this course, my mentor and I created the unit plan to include various digital and technological resources. All three days of the plan include use of the Smart Board and/or TV, Smart Files (notes), and digital annotation tools. These are used to guide students through lesson instruction, walking them through notes and examples that mirror those in their paper packets. The adaptive learning platform, ALEKS, is used on multiple days of the remediation plan as a form of homework and/or extension practice. It is used during independent work time where students can independently progress at their own pace, practicing skills that they have not yet reached mastery in. I also utilize Kahoot, Jeopardy, Pear Deck, and student Chromebooks at some point within the three-day unit lesson plan. Kahoot will be used as a warm-up to engage students in learning and review prior knowledge (Wang, 2020). Jeopardy will be used as an interactive group activity that allows students to apply their learning and work with others. Chromebooks will be used to allow students access to digital resources.
The Smart Board, Smart Files, and annotation tools all engage multiple learning styles in lesson instruction. Information is present visually on the board, auditory through the teacher’s instruction, reading/writing through the student’s notes, and kinesthetically when students must fill-in the missing blanks on their own notes and raise their hands during instruction. I will ensure that these technologies are used appropriately by preparing all files and tools for use before the lesson, checking that I have all necessary slides and tools open for the lesson to minimize technical difficulties with loading or opening materials. ALEKS engages students in individualized practice that caters to their learning abilities and levels of readiness. I will ensure this technology is used appropriately by assigning students specific tasks or skills to complete, so they do not misuse the platform or engage in off-task behaviors. When students are on personal Chromebooks, I will monitor their use of technology by walking around the room, monitoring what tabs they are on. I can simplify this process also by using a tool such as Go Guardian to monitor their digital activity. I will use Jeopardy, Kahoot, and Pear Deck to create an interactive lesson and activity that provides students will engaging tools to practice lesson ideas (Pear Deck, n.d.). I will ensure these tools are used appropriately by modeling and facilitating the entire activity.
The use of the Smart Board, Smart Files, and annotation tools promotes global awareness of interconnectivity and collaboration (Eckert, 2021). They demonstrate how digital tools can be used to encourage discussion and incorporate multicultural perspectives. ALEKS promotes this awareness and diversity in its inclusion of real-world contexts, global curriculum, multilingual supports, and individualized/equitable learning across culture (Chmura, 2021). Electronic quiz games like Jeopardy, Kahoot, and Pear Deck encourage diverse cultural perspectives through the integration of global curriculums and personalized learning across multiple cultures and contexts. Utilization of these electronic quiz games allows educators to enhance ideas of global awareness with the inclusion of real-world, culturally relevant problems.
