A Quiet Night

The moon hangs low

Barely to be seen through the trees

And the sky above

A dusky evening blue before the stars appear

Blue with the faintest wisps of clouds

Above the rise and fall of the insects hum

And the air is comfortable cool

The perfect night to sleep out beneath the stars

And I laugh to myself

At people

People will camp out in the woods with strangers

But won’t sleep in their own back yards

Surrounded by neighbors.

It seems the perfect night for a hammock to me

Or a lawn chair

And I laugh again

Perhaps I’m just stranger than they

But I wonder what dreams are carried on the evening breeze

I live for evenings as these

Well, that was lovely! I wish I could sleep in my backyard but I’m inundated with deer. They’re very social and very large this time of year. They come for the buffet. I need a fence!
